Ok I recently decided to start a planted shrimp tank. After digging around the storeroom, I found this 8g BOYU tank set which I purchased by didn't really use. It came with an undergravel filter and I threw it away since its not the best filtration for a planted tank. At the same time, I was interested in 3D backgrounds and wanted to do one on my bichir tank. But Im afraid of messing up so Ill try on a small scale on this tank first.

I used clear RTV sealant which i brought from my aquarium store as well as a 3D background.

So here is the current tank

As for filtration, I got a Resun CY-20 mini external canister filter as well as a sponge prefilter to fit at the strainer so that no shrimps get suck in.

However I now having problem placing the intake strainer in the tank. The sucker cups which came with it can't stick onto the 3D background. Currently I am using a thread tied to 2 small needles at each end, wind it around the intake pipe and nail the needles into the 3D background. Here this would give you a clear pic of what I am talking about.

The actual canister is now currently cycling in my other tank and I have about a week left for the sealant to completely cure. I fear the threads might break anytime and the needles could have detrimental effects on the water. So I need help with fixing the intake strainer permenantly.

Can you just wedge it in with the top? It doesn't necessarily need to be secured to the tank. You don't want metal in your tank.
Have you tried a suction cup on the glass side instead of the background?

I cant wedge into the hole at the lid as the hole is too big. This is a really cheap and low quality filter so the intake tube is just a large piece of U tube which isn't bendable and I cant attach to the side since the hole at the back of the lid isn't at the side

Can you cut a bigger hole in the lid, or leave the lid off, or get another lid?

Could use a couple of 'Heater suction cups' (the kind that the heater clips into), cut a slice into the 'cup' part of each and then silicone them onto the background, once cured the intake would clip in and out of the heater clips.

PS my 6g shrimp tank has 2 Whisper 3i filters (one each side) and I have to fish baby shrimp out of them every week, but there never seems to be any ill effects on the shrimp. Begining to suspect they deliberately swim into the intakes cos there's so much food in the filters for them!

I don't think cutting a hole is possible for me as im not really a DIY kid.

I like the idea of silicone the cups to the background idea. But how do I hold them in place while the silicone cure?
