Ok I have a 55 gl tank that I want to make into a sump for salt water can all you mfkers help with design. I would like to know how far apart should my baffels be how much space is requierd for a protien skimmer any info will help I have very lil exper. In sumps and refugiums and what would u guys recomend is better plain filtration sump or refugium. thanks in advance

This was for FW, but the design could be altered for SW. As far spacing for a skimmer, that will depend on the size of the one you will use.

I think an old 55 gallon tank is ideal for changing into a sump. I have three 55 gallon sumps myself.
You need to get your protein skimmer first then design the baffles around that. I would also look into using a filter sock. This is exactly what it sounds like. Water going into the sump goes through this sock first and cleans large particles. My next sump will use this design, unfortunately I didn't know about these socks when I built mine.

Like the other posters suggested you need to design the compartments around the skimmer and pump. Figure out how large a fuge you need and then allow for a mechanical chamber.
I switched back to using filter socks and do not regret it. I thought using poly filter and foam was the way to go and tryed that for a few years. Too much work and replacement. The only drawback to using socks for me is we have very cold winters here and cleaning them off with a waterhose is not fun in February.

My buddy just rinses his off in the sink and throws it in the washer. Never seen it out and dirty though, i could see it being a little nasty for putting in my machine lol
