We have a large labeotrophus Fwelborni (sp?) and I am thinking about finding a female and trying to breed them they are a real cool looking fish and want to breed them...

Found this on the internet maybe it can help you some!

Breeding
In tanks with the right size and with the right care it is fairly easy to breed.Forms a matriarchal family. Eggs are laid on carefully cleaned rocks and fertilized with the dummy-egg method. Up to 40 eggs are laid, but usually not more than 12. They are then mouthbrooded by the female (ovophile mouth brooder) for 21-30 days. The fry are free-swimming after 3 weeks and can be fed small live foods. Breeding is not difficult.
The Fuelleborn's Cichlid has chisel-shaped teeth which are adapted for scraping algae off of rocks. This fish's color and pattern varies greatly depending on the area that the fish is found. In some areas, males specimen possess female colors, and carry the eggs in the throat sac. (cichlid foundation)

Hit some local aquarium shops and buy at least 2 females (3 or more would be better). Look for more rounded anal fins with out eeg spotts on them. (please note that this is not a 100% positive way to identify females) Put the females in thier own aquarium and feed them heavy multiple times per day and do partial water changes at least every other day for about two weeks. THese are algae grazing so include spirulina in thier diet. After a two week conditioning period, introduce the male into the females aquarium. He should spawn with at least one of the females with in 48 hours if not more of them. Remove the male after a couple of the females are carrying eegs in thier mouth, I personally would strip the fry from the females mouths after 14 days and raise the fry in thier own aquarium with a "fry safe" filter like a sponge ilter for example.

THey are pretty easy to spawn and fun fish to raise...good luck

OK guys thanks for the help but something else has caught my attention... This guy looks nothing like any of the other fuelleborni that I can find online! He looks like a peacock with the fleshy lump on his top lip! He has patches of dk. purple dk. blue and white with 3 or 4 yellow egg spots...

Why not post a pic of your fish. Best way for someone to help you ID the fish. It seems as though some of the Malawi's need a community type of setup to breed. Why I say this is my supplier, imports around 2000 wild caught's at a time directly from the lake, has some of the same species as I have but in seperate tanks with a male and a couple of females and his fish have not breed yet. Had them together far longer than I have had my fish yet I have succesfully breed 3 or 4 times. The only difference is my fish are all together in one tank and he seems to think some of the fish need the community living.
The only reliable way to sex is by venting and this requires the fish to be of reasonable size. The bigger the better. I have a male and 2 female Lab feulleborni, 1 an OB, with the plain female carrying at the moment. Male can be seen on one of my posted pic's in my gallery.
 :naughty: :clap :headbang2 :woot:
