I have a 210gallon with a 50 gallon sump. I know my tanks not cycling enough it has two rio 1700 with 4' of head loss that puts it at about 352 gph per pump, that gives me just 3 times per hr. First i need to figure out what my overflows can handle , second what pumps do you recommend. The tanks is a all glass it is about 5 years old. I've searched the web with no conclusion as to what the overflows can handle. I really need to figure out the capacity of them to maximize filtration. Thoughts?

My nitrates are sitting at 40 ppm. I'm in the middle of doing a water change right now. I'm going to be buying a new pump tmrw. So your expertise and experience would be appreciated.

My test kit must be $h!t. I've changed about 50% of the water out and it says that nothing changed, so i tested the tap water. Its telling me my tap water has 40ppm yah right!! Lol. So i still need to figure out what the overflows can handle. I want it turning over the tank at least 9 to 10 times per hr. Mag drive, laguna? Anybody???

OK....first off we need to know your bulkhead size and how many you have to determine maximum flow to the sump before we can determine your pump size. Second...make sure you are shaking your tester solution bottles, especially for nitrates, properly according to the directions. Also...I usually wait 24hrs after dosing with a dechlorinator before testing with Nessler based kits because it can sometimes show false positives.

PS...I have never had any issues with Mag's in the past although I don't have a tank with a sump anymore. I had a Mag 36 on a 240g and a 24 on a 210g both hooked to DIY spray bars.
 
The bulkheads for the drain are 1" there are 2 drain's totall. The overflow towers were stock with the tank. The tank is 30" tall, the overflows are 10 1/2" wide.


Ps. I did shake the bottles before use, i got a reading of 40ppm on the first test. I tested through out the water change with no change, so like i said i tested the tap water and i gave the same reading.

Here's a good read from the man himself. He designed the BeanAnimal drain ( 3 lines running). There is also a Herbie style drain ( 2 lines running). Basic premise is the main drain is fully submerged, so the is no air running in the line. This moves water much faster than a line pulling air in. Both systems use the second drain as a backup, with the Bean having an extra backup.

The chart shows flow rates all at full siphon ( no air ). As long as your teeth on you weirs are decent sized an you don't throw a Reeflo Hammerhead on it lol, I think your overflows are more than adequate. If not then, you'll need to throttle back your pump(s) with a valve or loose some teeth. I think your overflow size is fine for the amount of turnover you're shooting for.....

That's an interesting read. So let me ask you this do you think 10 times per hr for 3 pbass 2 dat's in a 210g is adequate?

I'd say more than adequate. I run 10x on my 135 Malawi that houses some 40-45 fish. I aim for around 7 on my other tanks and that is a bit more than really needed.

With regular water changes 10x, would be more than enough
 
Alright. So what do you recommend for a pump? I've heard good things about mag drives, and laguna pond pumps. Are they good brands?
