A couple days ago a friend gave me his marine land 350 magnum canister filter because he was taking down his 80 gal tank. Ive always used the hang on back filters so this is my first canister filter and im having a little trouble. I followed the manual and plugged all the hoses in right and everything seems right but when i turn it on it makes the noise but nothing happens....

Im guessing that when the canister is turned on the impeller blows the air out of the outtake and the air inside the canister should be replaced by the water flowing in thru the intake, and then pushed out the outtake. So that's my guess on how it works, also im not using the carbon i have the other filter cartridge in.

Is it primed and full of water?

The manual said it would fill on its own. It wont fill with any water. What would i do to prime it?

Sounds like it's not primed. This worked for me when I set-up a couple of Eheim's last week: make sure intake and outlet hoses are below water level of tank and that the canister is below or at a lower level than the tank. Disconnect the outlet hose from the canister and suck on the canister outlet (use a pump or your mouth). When you hear water rushing into the canister via the intake hose, reconnect the outlet hose to the canister. Switch on the canister when water starts flowing into the tank/outlet hose. Good luck.

i say fill it i have experianced with those you fill it then it will have the water inside so you will already now if it does pump the water or not

HINT: sometimes its ok to not follow the rules you can do what you think u should do like for taquitos they say wrap them in a paper towel but i dont lol:) :)

With the pick up in the tank below water, stick the return line in your mouth and suck. The canister should fill up. Give it a few minutes and plug it in.

Ok thanks guys, i just had to suck on the outtake tube and it got working. had some leakage but nothin a couple rubber bands and a towel cant fix :D

How old is it? I am running one that is 17+ years. lol these things will run forever...

Yeah let it slow seal itself overnight, do not fill it to the top before turning it on. For example, I let mine fill to about 1/2 - 1" to the top, turn it on, then over night while it runs it seals itself that 1" - with no leaks. Then from there I can turn it on and off whenever with no leaks.

Good luck!
