Okay, so I haven't been on this site for that past 5 or so months...due to a cracked 75 gallon and no more fish other than one surviving pleco. Yesterday I was given what I believe is a 75 acrylic reef tank. I say reef because it has some kind of filtration system built into the tank that I've seen with saltwater setups.

Please look at the photos I've attached and answer any of the questions I have if you know the answer.

1. What kind of tank is this?
2. Can I use this as a freshwater setup?
a) what steps are involved in setting this up?
b) how does this filter work?
3. What am I missing to get this setup running?

Please add any additional advise you may have...I know that I'm going to keep something that is relatively low maintenance and something that doesn't breed...any suggestions for fish is also welcome.

Thanks,
JP

this is a show tank which is designed to hide all wires, heaters, filters, etc.
yes it can be used with freshwater, the water flows in at the top then it goes through the filters into the bio balls and at the bottom left corner there is a pump that pumps the water through many small holes at the bottom of the tank. its kind of like a loop system.

oh yea you can put your heater in the little compartment where the water flows in so it will be hidden.

1. its a very nice seamless tank which is worth more money than a regular tank.

2. yes

A. rinse and clean out everything thoroughly. you can use diluted bleach (make sure it is not scented) at a 1/10 bleach to water ratio. just make sure to use a water conditioner like prime to neutralize the bleach when done

B. this is kinda like a sump built right into the tank. the back of the tank is the overflow and the sump combined from what i see in the pics. you will need a powerhead at the exit end of the pump to return water to the tank and to help the flow of water through the sump. the white filter pad is your mechanical filtration, which will catch particles of waste, etc. the blue bio balls are your bio filtration. looks like you have a pretty good amount for them. you should thoroughly rinse these off as well since you think it was a reef tank. salt and fresh water have different bio bacteria so it will not help you to skip a good rinse on these bio balls.

3. please make a detailed list of what you have from the setup and this question can be answered

Hey thanks for the responses and much needed help...are there reading materials on this specific tank and sump system?

Thanks again,

Do anyone know what this tank is called? I want to research it prior to filling with water.

Thanks,
