Found this little guy while doing water changes outside today. Looked it up briefly online and thought it might be a northern red salamander, but not I'm not sure - their distribution isn't suppose to be this far north.
Note: it's been the wettest June on record here.

I miss being up north where you could literally stumble upon these guys. Now i can't even find a store that sells any of the newt species :( Red Efts are possibly one of the coolest phases in all amphibians IMO

You should have striped newts and peninsula newts down there. Neither is likely to have an eft stage, but they're still cool critters.

I have never seen a newt here. i assume that it is too hot for them. most newts do not like it to be tropical that i know of

They're there, I promise! Not all newts are as fussy as the European and Japanese species they sell in the pet stores.

Yes, they're cool little buggers. You can keep them in a semi-moist terrarrium, no heat, but you'd need a good source of tiny insects. We used to just scoop up a bunch of moss and leaves and put it in, they'd hunt whatever bugs were in there...wingless fruitflies would probably work. They'll be out and active more than the common terrestrial pet salamanders like tigers and other mole species.
