channa micropeltes - aka GIANT snakehead, they get huge 3'+

It's a "variant" of Channa micropeltes. To sell better (higher price), just add "golden" to the name... so it's referred to as "golden channa micropeltes" by some people to differentiate it from the more common-look micropeltes. Can be found in Malaysia which the people refer to it as "toman emas" (toman = snakehead, emas = golden/gold. As they grow bigger, perhaps they will look more like the common ones <--- perhaps someone can confirm this??

Search for "toman emas" at Youtube to see some nice juveniles...

So this is the one they call golden?

As I said, it is called "golden Channa micropeltes" by those who are selling at higher price. It is not "golden snakehead". "Golden snakehead" is the common name for Channa stewartii. Names can be very misleading...

Fishyman... I think you are right. They look golden when they are young right? When they grow up they will look like GonePhishing micro. And finally their colour would be like normal micro. Just from my understanding... :)

No, they are NOT golden, small or big, period. It's a more mature C. micropeltes. The red gets washed out. Beautiful fish.

I'd have to disagree with fishyman , This isn't a variant. Although he is correct some people do list them as a variant to try and get a higher price.

In reality it's an immature Micropeltes in the process of color change from immature to mature coloration.

They all start off striped and red, as they grow the pattern gets muddled up and colors wash out, then shortly after they begin to darken up until the display the typical micro coloration and pattern.

Give it a few months time it will look like every other micro out their. Also a forewarning as it matures not only will it develop the typical micropeltes coloration, it will also develop the typical micro attitude, I mention it because i see the tail of a gar in the background and something else swimming past in the top corner.

If you want these other fish to survive I'd get the micro into it's own tank sooner rather then later ! You have a time bomb of a fish in that micro, they are known to suddenly turn into a killer over night and kill off all their tank mates, even those that they were fine with while growing up!
