Some of you may remember in an earlier post, that my wife wanted aquatic turtles. Well I was opposed to the idea. However today while walking our dog, she saw a small turtle laying in the sidewalk, and decided to keep it. I think it must have been chased by something or picked up by a bird and dropped. Here are a couple pics. Any idea of species?

How were you able to deduce it was female?

I would say it is probably a female and definitely a red ear. Get rid of the gravel and add something that your turtle will not swallow (sand, tiles, larger river rocks, etc). Get UV lighting and feed it the commercial diets.

DO NOT RE RELEASE THIS ANIMAL they are invasive in FL and are now illegal to buy, sell, trade, gift, or acquire. I don't think that you will have a problem with anyone as long as you do not breed or release it.

You can tell by the claws
The males have very long claws as they are used while courting to "tickle" the female's head
