At first I assumed my new cichlid was a venustus, then I thought it was a fuscotaeniatus, but now I really think its a nimbochromis livingstonii. Please help me get a positive ID lol...

I agree with nimbochromis livingstonii, due to the green on the face and redish lining on the dorsal fin.

Ok I got one person thinking its a venustus and another who thinks its a livingstonii, I'm confused lol...does anyone know for sure?

& thanks malcolm, I got him for only $10 at my LPS...hes about 6 or 7 inches

I read that the blotches / marbling pattern on a Livingstonii will smear together and a Venustus will be more defined. I just bought a little Livingstonii juvenile 2 weeks ago. :)

C L O W N K N I F E, have you seen yours display his hunting technique by pretending to play dead yet?

Ya I read about that hunting technique, but no I haven't seen him perform it :(...how about you? I guess I could put a rosey or two in there and see if he does it LOL...sounds cool to watch...I don't think theres enough sand in my tank for him to burry him self though. Thats a nice juvie livingstonii btw :)

don't think it is a livingstonii...pattern is not quite right.

Could be a hybrd. Nevertheless a pretty fish

Thanks for the comment ecoli, but I disagree...it looks every bit of a livingstonii to me now. Their pattern varies, but their spots are mostly joined with other spots or smeared together. They are closely related to the venustus, but they don't have as much color as the venustus.

Heres some pics of a livingstonii on google that look a LOT like mine,
