Cant get picture at the moment since he/she camera shy

But bought this knife fish at a lfs, and they never had a specifc name of what kind it was, and i was told maximum size it would grow is 6 inches

His a brown colour and his shiny, if that makes sense lol

Does it look like a small CK without spots, whollyu brown?

Yep, checked on AKF, could be it but they grow much bigger

Sounds like an African brown knife. Seen them in various shades and also depends on environment and stress.

Thank for the advice, any good tank mate you would recommend with this fish?

Nothing too small as they may/will eat it. Do well with larger peaceful fish as not very aggressive. I seem to recall them schooling a bit as well.
