Hello I have a 50 gal bowfront tank with a top fin 55/75 filter but I want to make my water even cleaner so what is the best yet cheapest DIY filter I can do thanks

in the above design, the water overflows the plex siliconed in the corners, then pumps out through the tube at the bottom via pump, all hidden under gravel/sand/soil, and out through either co2 reactors like mine, or just into the open water, under a rock or decoration or something. if you don't like algae scrubbers, you could load both sides with filter media. I like the fact that there is no need for a big ugly sump or anything, and nothing is going to leak outside the aquarium.

The best/cheapest filter you can do is to hang some Pothos plant clippings in your tank or in your HOB filter. They will pull the nitrates out of the water as they grow.

If water clarity is your primary concern then I haven't found anything that beats a DE filter.
