Ok everyone. (yes i probably sound like a noob right now) I would like to ask a couple questions. Ok im gonna buy myself a 20 gallon with X-mas money and would like to ask if I should get 4 or 5 bigger sized fish in it or like 7-11 small fish (so like a school) and once you've answered this question, write what type or certain fish it should be. I like exotic and colorful fish (i love angels,so stuff like that) or i might try some small types of cichlids. Thanks, and please respond. Sorry i sound so formal Kl

Hey how about trying 7-11 celestial pearl danios, or how about 9 of them and add a dwarf gourami, those are exotic looking.

7-11 gold barbs would be cool as pie with some ghost shrimp and an apple snail. Odessa barbs are among the prettiest.

Yeeaaaah, larger tank adds tonnes more options. You can have tonnes small fish or you can have several mid sized ones in a huge tank... or some of the bigger ones... But 20s are nice. Small cichlids; krib, ram, checkerboard... there are a few I guess... But alas I am a fan of the cyprinids.

have a butterfly fish with slightly tanned water and some floating plants and a school of 10 or so whiteclouds... i always find watching small cichlids defend their area of the tank quite fun but you cant keep many in a 20 gal...ive had 2 rams take a whole tank.

a 20 gal let see a couple dragon gobbies a pleco some tetras and some mollies maybe or some barbs and hatchets

If it where me I'd go with a 20 long and a breeding pair of Convicts. If you have other fish you could feed the fry to them or you could see if your LFS will take them off your hands. That would be a perfect tank for them though and they are fun to watch. They are great parents. They are also a pretty common cichlid to find and they are easy to care for.

well if i tried to , my mom would say no cuz she thinks im to immature or somethin. (ik know, wtf?) anyways, my mom has so many excuses. i asked her about this 36 gal bowfront aquaria* starter kit with arlic(i know i spelled that wrong) glass, and she said no cuz it was to big and when i proved to her that it wasnt, she said that she just doesnt want another fish tank, cuz shes stubborn

if you're going with the tank mentioned in the original post, go with a pair of the Apistogramma of your choice (since you said you might want dwarf cichlids) and a school of tetras (rummynose perhaps?)

2 of my favorites in my 20-gallon are my scavengers, Corycat juliis, and my algae-eaters, Otocinclus catfish. They don't take up much room and they're really fun to watch, very playful and of course they maintain the tank so the other fish can thrive. The cories love my bubble wand. I have a pair of Blue Rams in there, they're gorgeous and have acclimated well (were bred in local hard, 7.4pH tap water). I like my 29-gallon better BUT I love my 20G, enjoy! I just put a few plants in the 20 a couple weeks ago, that makes it look good and the fish love them, it's amazing the difference, they seem much more secure. I'd put Fluorite below your substrate, or else Ecocomplete, if you do planted.

cories and tetras like rummy nose, cardinals, neons, von rio and such with maybe some otos fo algea in a nice planted tank and it would be very nice. you can also go with ur smaller cichlid idea and get some shell dwellers or get a ram as a centerpiece fish and build around him ;)
