I am going to place a 20 Gallon tank directly behind my display. The top of the 20G will be 1" above the top of the display. The display will have two drain lines that run from the display to the 20G.

The drains in the tank will be 2 inches below the water line, and the drains entering the 20G will be below the water. The system should absolutely silent, while still maintaining a full siphon, and should also be overflow proof.

The problem is how can I do mechnical filtration on this type of setup, with everything underwater I don't know how to do mechanical filtration. I was thinking about using an old canister filter.

The tank in my bedroom is pretty quite but not silent. If I run it at full siphon it gargles every minute or so like normal. If I run it in a partial siphon then I can hear the water draining due to air in the plumbing, and I can also sometimes hear a very faint sound of air getting sucked in.

The system is quite enough to sleep with, but I want silence. I know this will work and will be silent as air will not be allowed in or out of the system, but don't know how to make it filter out gunk.

Maybe I am mistaken but without a pump, wouldnt the water levels just equalize and stay the same?
