So, I just got a Bala Catfish to replace the Pictus that didn't make it on the trip from Seattle to Pullman. My fish guy in Pullman said that it would work in my tank, and I absolutely love him. His personality works so well with my darling Oscars.

However, I can't find ANY information or care sheets on Bala Cats, and I pride myself in knowing about my fish, and how to care for them, and make them happy.
So, can anyone help me?

What exactly is a bala catfish?
You have any pics?
I can't find any info on them, unless you're talking about bala sharks, but I doubt that.

I am almost 100% positive that you are talking about bala sharks. There is maybe ONE, and that is up for debate, species of FW shark. Bala's could definetly be considered catfish in my book. Bala's work great with oscars.

Are you talking about Bala Shark? It's not a catfish at all actually it's a carp. Hope you have a decent sized tank and not some 10/25Gallon jobby as they get over a foot long when adults you'll need a MIN 50 gallon+ (With a tight fitting lid as well, These little guys can jump out in a heartbeat). feel free to google them under their scentific name of Balantiocheilos melanopterus

Enjoy it!

I promise you its NOT a bala shark. it has whiskers and if it has scales they are so small you can barely see them. I know bala sharks when I see um, and this lovable lil guy is no Bala Shark.
That's why I was asking for the info, I was wondering if he was mis-labeled cause I can't find anything online. The store I bought him from has been really good about their labeling and information so far. The guy working that day told me they rarely carried bala cats, but I know they carry bala sharks regularly and have seen them everytime I go in.

Here's some pics, he's in the upper right corner of the tank (he's very active and wouldnt hold still for a photo op. He's 4-5inches, smooth bodied, has whiskers, and that catfish spine on his dorsal fin.

it looks to me like a columbian shark (catfish). He will need brackish, and eventually full salt water

it does look like a columbian shark, but close ups of the fish would help with identification

Thanks guys, that does look like him. Ill try to see if he'll stop moving for a second so I can get a pic of him not moving
