I would really like to get a few of these awesome fish but I would have to construct a large pond for them. What I need to know is what is a minimum temperature I would be able to keep them in, during winter the water can get quite cold and Id hate to kill a $500 (Australian) fish through ignorance. I havnt been able to find a reliable source of info as yet I was hoping you guys could help.

They could probably survive cold snaps for brief periods. I'd say no colder than 40F for short periods but 50f would be my guess as to a normal low for them. This is not an expert opinion just a guess on what I know about them. I'm curious what others think.

realy?! thats cold!hehe. then i think its all on the size of the pond and how quick the temp drops in the pond coz if it drops real quick then it could be bad for a captive bred thats not used to that kinda temp.

Thanks guys, none of the gator gars are captive bred in Oz (all smuggled in). Also the temp never drops that low (the min ambient temp is usually about 5 celcius and thats overnight the day temp during winter is about 20 celcius so yeah. Thanks.

Tropical fish shouldn't go below 65F, I try to keep my tanks at 78 and 83 for breeding and water changes with straight cold water to simulate rain seasons...

Those temps are rather high for long term alligator gar.

I'd suggest keeping them between 14C-24C. True, they are hardy fish and can take colder for short periods. Expect them to go off of food when it does dip down into lower temps.
