I just bought a Jewel Cichlid and the black spots on its sides are not exactly there... will they eventually appear as she matures? or did i get an ugly great of a cichlid?

Also i put it in with an Acei Cichlid and they are not fighting and seem to actually really get along. They are always with eachother but once in a while the Acei Cichlid shudders and shakes in a strange way. He only started doing this since i put the Jewel Cichlid in. Does anyone know the reason for this?

Thanks in advance for you help! :headbang2

What size are the fish, size of tank?

As Jewels mature the aggression level increases....especially in thier most colorful mode...breeding condition...It's possible to keep them with other fish when young but they should be in a species tank when they mature. I have a pair that just spawned and produced fry at about 3". Eventually they get to be 5" to 6" with the commons... generally a bit larger than the reds...

How do you know this fish is a female? It's almost impossible to tell. I breed them and cant tell a male from a female in a group just by looking at them.

the tank is 56 gallon and the jewel and acei are about 2.5 or 3 inches each.

and i myself cannot tell that it is female, i was told that it was. its possible that i could have been lied to of course haha

The only accurate way I know of to tell the sex of a Jewel or Red Jewel is if SEE what one is laying eggs....

Sounds like you have a male and female and he's trying to court her. You might be a grandfather in a few weeks.

Impossible. Not compatible. Jewels lay eggs, while Acei are mouthbrooders. Good try though.

i thought it was impossible to tell jewel sex at that size

Oh, I don't know I've seen some strange combo couples. If the Acei is the male then all he'll have to do is fertilize them but then they may or may not hatch and then the different types of fish, mouthbrooder/egg layer might cause some problems...but you never know.
