Ok, i have a friend who has a huge custom basement monster tank. We have been looking on where if any place to get REAL alligator gars. Not the spotted, or long nose that the LFS call gator gars. Any info would help, if any is available. I know i have read that the reason why they are not available is because they cant catch small ones to sell. Anyways, thanks in advance.

have you checked aquabid? I have seen them there before

yikes... Id be nervous to have a real gator gar in my basement... I don't know where you'd get one, and I can't understand why it is legal to keep somethin that big ! Good luck to you in your search though, and your friend is very brave.

They are available pretty much seasonally..Right now being not the season.
A few show up from time to time in classifieds on various forums from people just not quite realizing what they are getting into.

My advice would be just to keep your eyes open and snatch them up quick. That and wait until next spring (may-June) when young become available again.

Checking the gar forum is often best as us nutty toothy ganoid people tend to post about where things are at and what their availability is.

thanks, but the one i found was a spotted gar. They label them alligator at the LFS, and they are not. Real gators are green and yellow eyed, very broad nose.

Yes Gator Gars green, but look alot like Spotted Gars when they are young so are very hard to tell apart unless you have a REALLY good look at them. Good luck on finding one. :)
