An island somewhere......
Considering plumbing my three tanks together onto one central sump system. These tanks are identical 270g. aquariums, all with center overflows. I've weighed the pro's and con's and have decided the pro's out weigh the con's... knock on wood.

Thinking of using one of those big pallet bins that the LFS use to store live rock as the central sump, with sock filters, filter pads and Kaldnes floating media. I'm also entertaining hooking that sump, from a external pump to a Ultima 2 beaded filter before returning into the 3 respective tanks. Should the sump be under the left, middle or right tank... or completely off to the side? The space under the tanks is only about 38" inches so only the Ultima 2-1000 model will fit. Need suggestions, diagrams, photo's, youtube links, etc. to help me with the design. Thanks for any help.

If there is room I would put the sump under the middle tank to reduce length of the plumbing. If not, you can put it where ever is easiest whether that is behind the tanks, next to them or in the basement below, etc.

Where the sump goes is irrelevant other than location in regards to head height. I would personally center it underneath.

You really would not need the Ultima. If you already have it, then go for it, but I wouldn't spend the $$. A sump with filters socks and ceramic media will do just as well.
