So I am admittedly no expert on this stuff and I am using the limited knowledge I have and the labor skills of my dad and I so I wanted to check in here and get some input. I'm going to be getting an acrylic aquarium that is 24"x24"x20" and I wanted to build a stand for it. This wouldn't be an issue normally but I want to build a stand that is 42" tall so I can see it with out crouching down to admire it all the time. I'm aware 42" is a pretty tall stand considering the footprint of the tank is only 24"x24" and my concern is stability/balance. The set up will be 6' tall including tank and canopy and having a somewhat smaller footprint concerns me. I really want a pedestal look and don't want this tank to look like it's just sitting on a dresser so I came up with the idea to put what I'm just calling "supports" on each side. They will be built into the primary stand and will each measure 6" wide, 24" deep and 30" tall and will have doors on the far left and right side of the stand. My thought is that this will give the base of the stand a 3' width while keeping the pedestal look and would also give me additional storage space and decent sized platforms to keep supplies on while I do maintenance. It will be a pretty basic but solid skeleton made of 2x4s and before the tank is up and running I will make it look nice as well. The sketch I will post will is not 100% to scale but most of it is extremely close.
