I'm looking into building a stand to hold two 40g aquariums. One on top, and one raised a bit off the ground. Breeder tanks. 36" long X 18" deep X 17" tall.

Here is what I was thinking. I can screw together the two squares that the tank will sit on out of 2x4 and screws, and then I was going to add legs to the side and screw the squares into the properly measured spot. The only thing I was considering adding to this design was a 2x4 on the side from the front left leg to the back left leg, screwed to the LEGS, and the side piece of the square holding the tank. Figured that would add support since it would be snug and connect to the square pieces and legs. Also planned on using screws + wood glue.

This will be my first solo stand design. Any thoughts or ideas? Don't throw any super fancy ideas or anything at me though. I have practically no tools and I'm going to check out a few power drills at the pawn shop just to get this stand done. Think extremely basic and budget. That's what I'm trying to achieve here.

Figure wood glues cheap, screws cheap, probably pick up a power drill for 10-20$ at the pawn shop, 2x4 are cheap, grab some sand paper to sand all the 2x4 edges nice and smooth/flat. Simple.

Thoughts? (P.S. top view is just the square piece the tanks would be sitting on, green marks screw spots, and front view has tanks in for measurement reference)

That design will probably work fine, however i would prefer the weight of the aquarium to be supported by wood instead of screws.

I agree with you. This was just the most simple and logical design I could come up with for my skill level and for what means of tools I will have. That's why I plan to also use wood glue to add extra fortitude and the extra piece on the sides to connect the legs and square w/ glue and screws. However I will have to sink at least 6" screws through in order to get the screw from the front side of the leg into that side support piece. Foresee any problems with that? I don't particularly see any issues with it as long as I get a good long screw to put through there a couple times...

Also, I believe I'll use a couple of steel L brackets where the square is connected to the legs underneath. Just to be safe.

I did this with my ten gallon tank. i'll send you pics:headbang2.

Identical? I look forward to seeing your design and pics and how it turned out.
