I would like to change over to LED lighting to get that shimmer effect without breaking the bank. My tank dimensions are 92in L x 30in W x 45in H.

Has anyone one used these products from EBAY?
Would they provide enough penetration in my tank to prove the shimmer effect?
Would 4 panles be enough if not how many panels would I need?
Blue and white or white only?

Those lights might be good for growing weed but with a tank as deep as yours, they may not do the trick.

I've gone from power compacts to led and have found the led's don't light up deep tanks nearly as well.

If you're looking for bright lighting, stick with power compacts.

I have 220w, 260w and 96w pc fixtures I'm selling if you're interested...they are super bright at 10,000K and 12,000K.

BTW, I looked at your links from eBay and these led's are 5600K which nearly replicates natural sunlight and is ideal for growing plants, but you don't get that shimmering effect in water that you want at 5600K...you will need 10,000k or higher to produce that effect, especially in a tank as deep as yours.

And their bulb size is too small at 0.5 cm. You need at least 1 cm size or larger led's to project enough light in a deep tank.

Bottom line is don't buy that eBay crap...it doesn't fit your needs.

I'd get the 30 watt LED flood lamps on eBay... Got mine from GoldenPSX (eBay seller name). I have two 20 watts on my 225 (24" high), tons of shimmer if you raise them above the water level and look awesome. They even have 50 watts if those can't cut it.

I have questions on this, it has to do with the point source of light vs the light spreading out along a tube right???

Exactly..thats why MH LED and incandescent do it...but T-whatever and PC do not.

Yep focused = shimmer. If you're going LED, just check to make sure it doesn't have some sort of diffuser covering the bulb because that will cut way down on the effect.

I think that one used CREE leds and a DIY setup from rapidled.com a mix of nutral white and warm white LEDs with out optics.
