Okay I've done my thinking and my research and all that... and I narrowed my 90 million ideas for the new 55 down to two. And now I'm stuck. I've been to all the LFS looking around trying to help me decide and these are still my two options...

African Cichlids... medium sized with lots of color. There is a great cheap selection I could get access to about a half hour from here.

Or..

A polypterus quest. I've got 2 six inch senegals and a six inch ornate, and I found an LFS that has laps and endlis. I know I couldn't get all the species in the tank, but it'd be fun to go on a treasurehunt.

So do I go with lots of active color, or a few little monsters? I've already got a 10 with convicts, a 20 with angels (nice, pretty passive tank) and a 29 with miscellaneous oddballs. What would go good with those tanks? The 55 is also in the living room so it would be in plain view of all visitors. Sorta like a centerpiece. What would YOU like to see at someones house?

if your gunna do africans, id do it set up from species from one lake/habitat not just assorted. but id go for bichirs anyway, although i duno how long that could hold some of the sp.

I was gonna do malawi if I chose the cichlids

Why dont you try Tanganyikan Cichlids instead of Malawis. They arent as colourful but seem alot more interesting. Apparently a Tang setup can be amazing.

Although at the moment Iwont make anymore recommendations because I dont have much experience of Polypterus

I didn't really research Tangs... but I think they get too big for my tank. I don't think I'd be able to have very many.
