Hey guys, I recently got a new 55 gallon, biggest fish tank I've owned so far, and I need opinions on my stocking plan. I plan on having this tank running by next week and letting it run for another 1-2 weeks to let it cycle before stocking it with fish. I have 3 species of cichlid i'd like to keep, not all together, it'd just be 1 of the species as a breeding pair. The pair will likely just be stocked alone unless I'm able to have another fish with them, pleco, etc. I like Green Terrors so I was wondering if I could keep a pair in my 55 but doing research, it seems they need a 75 gallon tank and up. Opinions? If they don't work I'd like to have a pair of Jack Dempseys, which I've read and researched would do good in a 55, so I need opinions on that. The last species I was thinking about as a pair was Salvini cichlids, I haven't researched much about them so any opinions and thoughts? I'm not into convicts, fire mouths and parrot cichlids also my options are really limited because my parents won't let me order online lol but if none of them work, I think I'll do a South American Biotope. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, and pair of jack demspeys or green terrors will out grown the tank. A salvini pair won't though. But green terrors take forever to grow and so jack demspeys aren't the fastest growing fish either.

look into dwarf cichlids

I have heard about JDs and GTs growing slow but I'll look more into Salvinis. I did look into dwarf cichlids and I do like Rams and Apistos, I'd like to have them in my 29 which only has 2 plecos at the moment but I'll have them on my list if I do the South American biotope

Only advice I can offer is it takes 6 to 8 weeks to cycle a tank. whither you cycle with ammonia, fish food, or drop raw shrimp tail in up to you. I prefer a couple of raw shrimp tails in a bio bag, drop 2 in and walk away. let the filters run, change 50% of the water a week till ammonia reads 0, nitrites read 0, and showing nitrate.

a single pair of salvini will work in a 55 but just know with any other fish they can be very aggressive.

How about some of the geophagus earth eaters?Red head tapahoes Excuse spellin comes to mind should be able to do 4-5/

I'll look into geophagus earth eaters, red head tapajos, and blue/yellow acara but I'm really liking Salvinis now. I still have a lot of time though so we'll see. Thanks for the help and suggestions so far!

Salvinis would work. The females are beautiful. Or you could do a pair of Firemouths.

In my 55 I have 4 Bolivian Rams and I'm really enjoying them. Only other fish that will be with them are cardinal and Rummynose tetras once they're done in qt.
