I got this guy last summer at my LFS. He was a drop off. One of those impulse buys where you just see the fish and have to have it. That said, I have no idea of his background. A few people have asked me if he is a texas/dempsey hybrid. Honestly I'm not sure so that is why I'm here! What do you guys think? Texas/dempsey hybrid, pure dempsey or some other kind of hybrid? He's about 9" and really a very cool fish.

Looks like a nice JD, with a load of Blue Genes!

Thanks! He's paired up with a BGJD so if he is indeed a blue gene carrier we will find out!

Ok, thanks for your thoughts!

Keep the opinions coming guys!

looks all JD to me. If you see something else let me know. Looks like one of them ebjd gene carrier that's matured in colors. Very nice one too. One of the best. Must breed

I thought blue gene's looked just like regular JDs?

Thats no hybrid, just a stunning jd.

Dispatch,

I was one of the people suggesting it looked a little off for a regular JD. There are two things that caught my eye and had me wondering. The first is the spotting on the face & chin - never seen a male JD with spotting like that. EBJD's have a broader blue wash and not the spotting like this. The second is the body seemed taller to me than JD's I am used to seeing. To me the spotting pattern and taller body suggest it could be a hybrid with a Texas. I don't agree with the suggestions of it being a BGJD - breeders of the fish continue to say you can't tell a standard JD from a BGJD by appearance. It is an absolutely gorgeous fish and to a point it doesn't matter if it is a hybrid. If you do breed it and look to sell the fry then it gets tricky on what you sell them as though.

Either way - good job raising this beast!

Regards,
Patrick

It is a little tall body for a jd but I don't think it is tall enough to be texas hybrid.

I've never seen a dempsey with that much blue on it's face, but it looks like a dempsey. Although, with a lfs trade in these days, who the hell knows.
