So my larger albino Oscar that lives in one of my 55s is showing signs of fin rot. His tank mates, male midas and male green Texas are not showing any signs. Qt tank is in use for some new stock so I'm kinda stuck there. Question is, should I move the apparently unaffected tank mates to my other, well established 55 grow out tank? Or do I need to treat the whole tank. Tons of differing opinions on the Internet and I feel like I get consistently well informed answers on here. Just stuck and need some experienced opinions. Been trying for the last half hour to get a pic to upload. Anyways, Allen is showing darkening where he was beat up in the 125. Where his fins were split and down his sides where Brutus tried to skin him. He was showing a great recovery rate until the last couple days when the darkening of the previously injured flesh. Water parameters are ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate ~25ppm. Weekend water changes have been in place and I used aquarium salt to try to help him regeneration the slime coat. Please help! I definitely don't want my other fish sick or exposed to med if it isn't absolutely vital.

Just do LARGE water changes frequently. Just know when in doubt, water change. It cant hurt anything, only help. If your keep your parameters as how you state, he'll recover on his own easily. Just give him some time and make sure no one stresses him out.

Having watched this progress I have a hard time believing that water changes will solve the problem. My curiosity lies in if I can separate my other fish without risk of contaminating the tank that they would go into. Or, to ask the original question again, is Fin rot contagious in the early stages

Danielcho is in a way right that wc's are always the way to go. Would add some maracyn/salt to ur tank and wc's as likely cause maybe ur water quality. Dose per the recommendations.

Water parameters are in original post. I've maintained regular wc's on a 50% weekly schedule. Aquarium is running 2 hang on backs and a submersible temp has been at 82 and Ive done the therapeutic dosage of salt. He seems more energetic and alert today. I'm still concerned about my other fish. Can I move them without spreading it if it is fin rot?

If it's one fish and for sure fin rot then no need to move the fish. But would add abx. Sorry I just saw ur water parameters.

No apologies necessary, main reason I ask is because I don't want to expose my other fish to abx. As I mention my qt tank is full of new stock. I have a safe, high water quality home for them with acceptable tank mates. I'll move them before I expose them to abx. So mostly I'm asking if it's possible to cross contaminate my other tank.

U can if ur fish are stressed. So if u got a qt tank then do it.

I've got new stock in the qt.. no gonna risk a proven mated pair before I can even introduce them to their real home. Went ahead and did another 50% water change and dosed the tank with abx. Its not something I ever want to do to any fish but their health is most important and I figured being proactive was the best option. Also being as healthy as all three of them are, I don't think that it's gonna hurt them any. Thanks for giving your point of view on this kno4te And danielcho
