um I seeded my new 55g with a few peices of drift wood plants and filter media from another tank a few days ago but the new drift wood I added is really staining the water can I do about a 20% water change to clear up the tannins or should I wait , the tank is currently stocked with 1 senegal bichir

I have drift wood that I boiled that still leeches tanis after one year. When ever the tanis gets too dark for me I do bi-weekly (25%) water changes untill I like the color.

You should be fine to do a WC to remove the tannis. It won't hurt you bacterial base.

I am not sure what its called but there is a product that you can put in your filter that would help remove the stain. I have never used it although I want to try it. I have a piece of wood that I have used for over a year and still stains the water.

The color of the water is really a matter of taste, I have friends that love the water to be a bit dark, that way it looks natural. I on the other hand really don't like the water to have any color. I don't think the bubble wall will remove any of the color, but a water change will help a bit. Also I have heard that some activated carbon will help to remove the coloring from the water.
