Hey,
I am brand new to these forums, and I have a few questions regarding sharks. Anyways I have been a fish enthusiest for years. And I have be running a saltwater tank for the past 2 years. And I would really like to own a shark or two. But I am in a little dilema. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I am not sure where to go about this. Aswell I am not sure what type to buy. I have been doing my research but I will I am better off getting your opponions and alot of you are very experienced with sharks. Anyways here are my questions:

1. What is the best shark to buy? I would like to keep it under 3'-4'

2. Prices? and tank size?

3. Stores which sell them

Please keep in mind prices are not an issue with the shark itself and tank. This is an investment I plan on making, so I have no problem spending the money I need to ensure my shark has ideal living conditions. I am looking forward to your responses.

Thanks, Brenden

Well as for the size of shark you are looking for I suggest a banded bamboo shark. I have 2 females housed together. For two of these sharks I suggest buying the proper sized tank right off the bat insted of wasting money on a tank that will just have to be upgraded later on. The size tank suited for these sharks would be around 250 gallons. Most sites and books suggest 180 but once they are full grown this size tank is a bit small.
Tenecor acrylic tanks are a good source for your tank and you would be looking at around $1800 or so for the tank. I suggest buying the shark eggs as I did. There is a store in Fredricton New Brunswick called "Aqua Center" that can get you the shark eggs for around $100 each. They might be able to bus them up to you with heat packs since thats the way they sent them to me.

  Go Big or Go home... Get a 600 Gallon, and throw in some Eppaullete Sharks.. would be SWEEET.. i wish i had your budget..:banhim:

Justin_James : Do you have an outside email you would be able to give me? I would like to talk to you more about the bannded bamboo shark. Unfortunattly I do not have the permission to send a pm on this site yet. So if you could pm me or email me that would be greattly appriciated.

Agreed, look into bamboo sharks. They are the best shark to start off with: easy to aquire legally, fairly hardy, managable size, good eaters and awesome selection to choose from (as far as color and pattern). I also agree with getting the final tank first. It's a HUGE waste of money to buy repeated grow out tanks, not to mention the stress of moving a shark back and forth.

Give me some time to get home, and I will send you an e-mail of a few types - bamboo being the best of course for sheer adaptability, and within the range you are looking for. Also, there is a lot you need to consider, as I have said before "novice" and "sharks" don't mix. Anyways, I have to run now, but I (and other's I am sure), will send you an e-mail later tonight ok. and incase you have specific questions, feel free

my e-mail is always open to those with questions.

Justin_James : Yes I did recieve it, thanks for all the information. Its now time for me to try and find a spot for the tank. I did not imagine the tank being 7'-9' long. But I will do my best to find a spot :D Also do the "coral cat sharks" grow up to the same length as the Bamboos and do they require the same sized tank?

Thanks, Brenden

No the coral cats only reach about 2 feet and a 180 would be ok for them. The problem is that here in Canada you will find a giant squid easier than a coral cat. In my opinion you would be much better off with the bamboos.

You don't need a 9' tank for the bamboos a 7' tank will be fine. Make sure it's 30" wide though. They say 2 feet wide is fine but it's better to have the 30" wide tank so they can turn around without much effort.

Hey,
I am back with a few more questions. I want to make sure I know everything I need to know becasue I go out and make this investment.

1. How often do these sharks need to be fed
2. What is there preffered choice of food
3. How often does the water/tank need to be changed with them

Thanks, Brenden
