I purchased a 125 gallon and would like to go bare bottom for the water flow but i dont necessarily like the look of see through glass. I've read posts about people painting the outside bottom of the tank but obviously i dont want to do this on a brand new tank. So i was wondering do you think i could use black paper on the outside of the tank at the bottom to give it a black look?

The problem with tile is if they aren't cut right or layed down flush and straight, you get debris build up in between the cracks and can sometimes be hard to clean or bring down your water quality. Also the average person doesn't have a tile saw available to them to cut the pieces to size.

I agree tile would look awesome but like slippery said i dont have a tile saw and i would be worried about waste getting in the cracks and underneath the tile and become unreachable. I actually just read somewhere that people used paper under the tank and it turned out good but idk. i'll keep looking

Maybe black foamboard under the tank would work? Never used it under my tanks though.

I would suggest adhesive vinyl underneath the outside of the tank the same stuff they make store signs with... very inexpensive easy to apply easy to remove..

if you have a glass tank not acrylic you can easily paint the outside of the tank regardless of if its brand new or not a little bit of thinner will make it like it was never there

i use styro under all my tanks. i went barebottom on a few so i rolled on black glossy paint on the styro. let dry of course. looked great..... until my fish took a dump. you dont realize how much waste is being produced in a tank until ya go bare bottom. 3 powerheads and 2 ac110s on a 75 gal couldnt keep it clean. good luck with the upkeep! it looks really nice when its spotless.

Hello; Depending on the tank size a piece of plywood may work. I cut a section of plywood and place it under most of my tanks. I make it an inch or two longer than the long dimension of the tank. This gives a handy edge to grip when picking up a tank and prevents cracking the bottom glass if a tank is placed on an obstruction. It also can make a handy little shelf at the end of a tank.
The plywood can be painted as this tends to look better over time. The paint can be a dark color to keep the tank bottom dark.
