im almost ready to fill my 125 w/ water and start to get it cycling. however not sure if i want to do a sump (which is what i have working now on the test runs w/ water in the garage). i really need your advice because im thinking of switching from the sump to a canister because sump is a bit noisy.

if i switch to a canister, would the picture above work? if the water from the corner overflow goes over bioballs and scrubbies can i probably use a canister rated for under 125 (with only mech and chem) and still have a healthy tank? i'll have a koralia 1400 gph powerhead for water circulation.

im planning on having a bunch of clown loaches

it will work the way it is. my suggestion would be to only run one return to the tank instead of doing a "y". this will allow for a more maximum flow rate. honestly, since it is going to already have a ton of media in the overflow, i would personally use an fx5 to polish! plus youll have plenty of flow with that korilia.

i would plug it up and only use one for return. especially since the gph rating on a canister is calculated when empty and no hoses attached, the less distance/ angles the water has to flow the more efficiant your canister will work for you

okay so i did my test run with the sump and 500 gph submersible pump and my flow is REALLY low with the check valve. is this normal?? without the check valve the flow was off the hook!!!! so choices are: go with a canister and ditch the check valve and only use one return hole (ala creepyoldguy's advice), or go with a more powerful pump and ditch the 500gph

im leaning towards creepyoldguy's advice since itll probably be quieter??

sorry for so many questions this past week. this is the first time ive dealt with plumbing/sump/canister/tubes in my life. (HOB AC fanatic here) MFKers have been a huge help!!! thx

i really dont have any experience with a sump, but i do know an fx5 for polishing and a korilia for circulation along with your bio balls in the overflow would be a great filter for a 125 with just about any reasonable stocking option
