hey any imput from fellow mfk members would be helpful. i had to put my choclate lab down about 3 months ago. he was 13 yrs and 6 months old. he kind of stared off in space and coundnt get up anymore. so i knew what had to be done. now my black lab is 15 yrs old and his long life friend is 13 is gone. so now one of his back legs is pretty much useless but he still hobbles around sometiime needing help back in the house. he just started recently pooping in the house. the nasty kind if you know what i mean but his head is still there wanting petting and comes to me no matter where i am and how much it may hurt him to get around. hes still all there as far as his attention and wanting love and petting but when do i decide? i was hoping i would wake up sometime and he passed during his sleep but that does not seem to be the case. im kind of stuck here not knowing what i should do. i had thought his mind would go like my choclate lab and not want to do anything but thats not the case this time. just wandering what you members with dogs would do if you were in my shoes right now. thanks for any input.

We had a multese that wobbled and had a hard time getting up.... but he never seemed like he was in pain... vet said not to put him down.... however in the end we ended up having put him down, but not for that reason it was b/c he had cancer his tumors were really bad and bleeding etc. I would talk to your vet about it and see what they say..

well the last time i talked to the vet he said it was up to me to determine his quality of life. i can take that to many ways to determine myself. he also said doge threshold of pain is much greater then a humans. i dont know how much pain he is in but like i said he still there all mentally but the crapping on the carpet and watching him hobble sucks. my train of thought is if hes not giving up then im not going to either but ive heard other people in my life say once they start pooping in the house and back legs are bad then its time so thats kind of where im at the crossroads. thanks for the reply though

I'm not real good at getting things across, so bear with me. I know you love your dog, I have three myself. The best advice I can give is think of how your dog FEELS. Dogs will do anything for their owners, even die and not think twice. Sometimes its best to put them to sleep before its absolutely necessary, to save them some face and pain. It will be hard for you, but what could mean more to your dog than to spend a relaxing day with you and then go to sleep with you right there. I have put a lot of thought into this, since one of my dogs is getting older.

they dont just go to sleep though, well they do but they know their going down. when i had to put my gsd down he knew before the needle was even visible that he was about to die. i wish i could explain it but just looking into his eyes told me a whole novel in one moment. first and only time i ever saw a dog cry, didnt even know it was possible.

let nature take its course please dont kill your dog

you wouldnt put someone in your family to sleep dont do the dog its good times and the bad, you deal with it dont cop out unless he is in major pain

dont do it unless he or she is suffirin . people live in pian every day take it from me i broke my back when i was 19 , 20 yrs old im 27 now it hurts still but no ones givin me the death penelty cuz im in pian.... so what if the dogs pooin all over the rug it happens in old age ask the older generation thats y they have nursin homes..

First of all .. you do not have a diagnoses...everything depends on what the dog is suffering from...sometimes it can be an easy fix.. even old dogs can have their health turned around if they need a certain medicine... such as a steroid ...so i would check that first...

dammit im in tears!!!

id let him live it out providing hes not in pain (and nothing can be done) etc..
im not a dog owner but have had cats in the same situation.
we had one that had mouth cancer and her mouth had rotted away (but we kept it clean and meds) and one that had quite a few probs, after he didnt eat for 3 days we decided it was time as we didnt want him to starve.

heartbreaking but there was no more we could do for him and make him comfortable :(
