My jewels decided to reproduce so I've never taken care or raised fry before and I really want to try. This is their first spawn I've left the parents in there so far things seem to be good. Just want some basic guide lines and advice from you guys.

I've got a sponge up already . I don't have a spare tank at the moment so I'm going to leave the fry with parents for now and hope things are ok. Will the fry eat crushed flake when they get some size to them?

Spectrum makes a really good powdered fry starter food that is high in protein for growth. I use a turkey baster to catch the little ones and I always wait till they are at least a week old to move the fry. I find it better to move the parents as fry can be delicate. If you have an hob filter you can use the fluval sponges from petsmart for like $3 to cover the intake. No substrate in juvie tanks with heat at 80°F seems to help them grow quicker, but requires vacuuming.

I raised some when I was a kid, I think I may have removed the male but I don't honestly remember. I just crushed up flake food really small and made sure there was a lot of java moss. If I were to do it again now I too would remove the parents. I'd hatch out some baby brine and feed them that once they were big enough. The java moss helps a lot in my opinion because it's full of tons of minute aquatic critters for them to eat until they're big enough to eat the flakes or brine. Good luck!

Leaving the fry in should not be an issue. And also just take flake dislodge and crush the heck out of it till it's powder. Most of the the time I find it's best to swish it in the water so it starts to sink and heads down to the fry especially if the fry are at the middle bottom.
