Anyone have any tips for removing sand substrate from an already filled aquarium? I have removed the fish and decor, I just want to know how I can safely remove the sand as not to scratch the aquarium.

You can use your vacuum hose to slowly siphon it out, but make sure you don't go too quickly or you'll clog the hose solid with sand. That's the easiest way for me. Another option is to use a pitcher and scoop it into that with your other hand, but that's a headache.

I like the siphon Idea. I was going to go with scooping it out, but that definetly is a headache, not to mention there is a greater risk of scratches. Thank you for the suggestion :)

I have a 300 gallon i put about 300 lbs of sand in just to find out that the sand really sucked. I tryed the small hose siphon but it cloged so quick so i went to homedepot and picked up a 9' clear 1 1/2 hose for less than $15. It worked great, i was able to just stick the hose as deep as i could into the sand and just start sipohoning. With the hose being clear i was able to watch it and keep it from clogging up.
