I'm just looking for some advice on an open wound situation. One of my larger Cichlids has an fairly large open wound caused by a jagged rock, since removed. Any advice on the treatment. I've been using Melafix, any other ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.

Never been a fan of Melafix. Get a Q-tip, dab it with betadine and carefully swab the wound with it. Then add a teaspoon of salt per gallon in your tank. Add another set in the next 12 hours totaling 2 teaspoons per gallon. The whole purpose of salt is prevent bacteria from latching on the wounds while the iodine solution (betadine) allows it to heal properly. Be sure to aerate water as well since salt depletes oxygen supply. Treat separately.

Lastly, make sure your salt has NO yellow prussiate added. Iodine content however is not an issue so don't worry if you use iodized table salt.

i just use aquarium salt seems to be fine for me
yeah but aquarium salt is more expensive than buying the big boxes of regular table salt, they just add the name "aquarium" to it so they can charge more.

and yeah i agree, i would go for adding salt to the tank, not sure how well the betadine would help since i would figure it would be rinsed off as soon as you added the fish back to the tank but i dunno, but def do the salt and keep stress down to as low as possible (lights off, water pristine, and as less movement around the tank as possible)

Lupin's advise is spot on.

If you don't have Betadine I have used Peroxide with good results in the past. The peroxide will kill any germs and the salt will increase the production of slime to protect the wound.

I have had very good results using this method. Isolate in a 10 -20g cycled hospital tank. Do a daily 50% w/c and treat daily with both melafix and pimafix.

Melafix is junk.

I'd stick with clean water and salt. If you don't see an improvement in a two days then I'd try a topical antiseptic (Hydrogen perxoide, betadine, Neosporin...).

If it is a very large open wound you can use hikari bio bandage. Its a gel that you spread over the wound and it will stick to it. It will shorten the healing time by a lot.
