I've got a newly set up 29 gallon with pool filter sand substrate, java fern, anubias, crypts and anything else I can keep alive with a standard bulb, and some driftwood. Right now all the tank has in it are a few rogue tetras, but the filter is currently fully seeded for a larger bioload, and if it takes longer, I can run it on an overstocked 125.

I want some keyhole cichlids. I know they're quite bashful and mild-mannered, but they're quite pretty. I'm in Michigan and I'm having a hard time finding any around here. I thought I'd break down and buy a bunch from Rapps, but if I can save myself the shipping charges, I'd love to. If anyone knows where I might get and keyholes in either the Lansing or Grand Rapids area, please let me know. :D

Or if you think keyholes are ***, give me alternative suggestions for a 29 gallon. LOL

Well not sure of any particular keyhole's sexual oreintation.....You could probably go with a firemouth pair or trio....

i've had a firemouth that puffed up at me every time he saw me, beautiful specimen with personality

Really? I'd heard of them as meek and "stupid." I never bothered because of that other input. On the other hand, my sajicas are pretty meek and stupid so I guess I'm not exclusive of the kind as it is since I think they're pretty cool for a smaller cichlid. LOL

Whatever you do, get a cool shoal of Clown Loaches. These have to be some of the most interesting fish, but you alreday know that.

I adore my CLs, but after an unfortunate internal bacterial infection (QUARANTINE YOUR NEW FISH!) I lost 4 and am down to a mere 2 until I buy at least one more. I love my clown loaches, I think they get their name in more than one way. My shoal of 6 woke my as* up from a dead hungover sleep with their incessant clicking one day, they were so loud! Now it's even worse that I only have two, because they are constantly bickering over everything.

I have three, they never fight. They do everything together. I want to start a CL tank, with a big shoal.

I've also got some cories in there that they shoal with a bit, and that eases the tension, but if I drop some cucumber in there, mine get loud. Mine are still quite small, only about 2.5". I've got to shoot some vid sometime when I drop some frozen bloodworm in there. LOL I started out with 8 originally, and fell in love with them, but one dropped dead from SCLDS (sudden clown loach death syndrome) and the other was oscar munch when I tried an experiment that failed. I'm justifying to myself buying some 4-6" CLs but ma don, they're like $45.

They are expensive when they are big. Do yours eat cucumber? Mine eat flakes, pellets, bloodworms, glassworms, etc. Mostly carnivores.
