need some filter help

i want to buy a sponge airstone for my tank but i want to know more about it before i buy it. was wondering what it does, how long it takes to establish, do i clean it, how often do i clean it. if some one can help me that would be great

sponge filter will cycle like any other filter 4/5 weeks , clean once a week or twice a month

why do you have to clean it? i thought you want that bacteria.
is there any way to know if its cycle yet

you clean it by squeezing it a few times in a bucket of aquarium water to remove any excess mulm and detritus. The bacteria will start working again within a couple of days so feed lightly during that period if no other filters are in the system.
