Im looking to start fly fishing, what are the key areas I need to look at in a rod? Ill be fishing for salmon and trout, nothing too fancy haha.

I bait fish but never tried fly fishing, wanting to give it a proper go!

What are the advantages of fly fishing over bait fishing?

Just asking generally about fly fishing as a whole.

Cheers,
Keith

definitely try it cuz its realy fun!!! for trout get lighter than a 6 weight rod with a matched reel, the 6 weight would be good for a beginer cuz its easier to cast cuz its stiffer, and it would be good for streamers, but dont go big yet for salmon, they need experience to land with a fly cuz there is prety much drag on the reel its all palming and its tough to turn the fish but for salmon get a 9 or 8 weight depending on whether or not u want a good fight or a great fight:D:D any way goood luck!!!

im not a real fly fisherman but one thing i can say is that do not pick a spot where there are bushes/trees, etc too close behind you. during your backswing your lure and line will get hung up. sounds obvious but if you don't fly fish much it may not occur to you until after it happens.....like it did to me.

When I wanted to learn new cuss words I took up fly fishing (for panfish down here in Florida).

It also allows you to turn your nose up at folks using baitcasters or spinning rigs.

It takes lots of space to get any good, so be sure you have a big clear area to practice, and a fairly clear area to fish in. I'd recommend spending the $30 on an inexpensive kit set up from shakespear or similar. I got one w/ a 7 weight rod and it did great for panfish on dry flies and small bass (1-2lbs) on some home made streamers.

Personally I'd go wtih a microlight spinning rig... but I fish in retention ponds and such too, so I may be crazy :)
