Alright so there are a few things I have questions and instead of posting multiple threads I'm going to do one.

1. I have some brown algae "Diatoms". What is the best way to get rid of this? And what is the quickest way of removing them?

2. How long does everyone recommend leaving the lights on? And is a night light recommend for aquariums? I have lights with both night and day features but currently only use the day feature.

3. What is the cheapest and best type of filter? DIY or Store Bought.

I just scrub brown algae off, it doesn't grow as quickly as green algae and isn't as noticable in my experience.

I have my lights on for 11 hours, 8am till 9pm. 8-10 hours is recommended for algae control although I don't get a lot on my schedule. I use a torch to watch my nocturnal fish although blue lights or moonlights are best

I use a very simple DIY canister mounted on my aquaponic system and an AC110 on my 70. I would say buying a decent canister or HOB is best for reliability

Sounds good. I currently have 2 fluval canister filters on one tank. And honestly would like to get rid of the two and make it just one filter. And I do about the same hours for lighting although I don't use the Blue LED that my lights have only because I have them set to a timer. So when the timer goes off it just goes completely off. I don't have the option to switch to night mode. :(

You don't need night lighting unless you have nocturnal fish as I do

Keep the fluvals. They work well

I'm considering trying blue LEDs since I'm sick of not seeing my catfish much

Unless you have plants, you only need lights when you want to watch fish, unless the room is dead dark 24/7.
Lets say you watch them in the morning before work for 30 minutes, and again for two hours after you get home.
You can put the lights on a timers to be on a little before you watch them in the morning, and go off when you leave for work or ?, and come on again when you get home for two hours or whatever. There isn't any need to have them on in between.
On many of my breeder tanks, I wouldn't use lights at all, only the ambient daylight of the room.
