Got all of my equipment to shoot my flash remotely....

I need all the help and suggestions one can give-
How do I go about doing this-

I got the following equipment to use-

Canon F2.8 100mm macro
430ex flash
canon off camera shoe cord....

N e help greatly appreciated...
Do I need my tank lights on or off?
N e basic setting to start out with-I know I will have to play around with the settings----But a general Idea on setting the cam up would be nice.....

i'd give you tips but i'm accually also looking for info on this aswell, i've shot both my Sb-400 and 600 speedlights but haven't yet shot the 600 remotely.

rally or mojo could probably help, we shoot nikon's though, so the setup may be different for canon speedlights.

To get started let the TTL cord do it's thing and tell the flash what to do. Having room lights off will help it focus, as will keeping the tank lights on. Mine focuses through the flash, I'm not sure if yours does or not. You'll know if you get some red lights coming out of the flash. To start out I usually go with a shutter of 1/125 at minimum, but usually it's a lot faster. Aperture can be made smaller since you'll have so much light and it'll increase your DOF.

The most important thing is clean water. Any crap in your water WILL show up with the flash. Once start playing around with it you'll notice what things need to be done differently. Angles, height, intensity, etc. will all make a difference in the final shot.

Once you get the hang of it, start experimenting with manual settings to fine tune it.

Thanks- for that info-
I'm going to try my first shots later on...
I will keep everything in mind while "attempting" to do this...

And yeah the setup is different from Nikon to Canon....But the basics should be the same....

And FYI-I only shoot manually.....

Shoot manually, but let the flash think for itself if it has the capability. Once you get used to the camera with the flash you can start fine tuning it depending on the results you're after.

Thanks Rally-
It Should "think" on it's own with the shoe cord----I was told setting up for slave would be where I would run into problems...

Do you happen to have ne pics of your setup Rally?
