I need some help everyone

This brown algae started growing a while ago, and now I have had enough of it. I rather not use any chemicals, but I will if everyone thinks it is best. This algae is very easy to scrap off, but it just grows back.

The only fish in this tank (30 gallons) is a JD. I have an extra 22 gallon tank that is empty, that has a very large footprint that I can use to put my JD in if needed.

Here are a few pics from tonight.

I do a 10 gallon water change weekly, and the Ammo and NitrIte is 0 And the NitrAte never gets above 10. I use RO water, with Kent RO Right, Prime, and a little Aquarium Salt. The lights are kept on for 10 hours daily.

Any opinions to get rid of this would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for reading.

i would reduce the amount of light its getting...

is it also by a window??

best way to get rid of it totally is to get a uv sterilizer i had the problem not to long ago month or so ago i just keeped sponging it off evertime i did water change but like you said it just keeps coming back . since i bought a uv sterilizer WOW what a differance took about one week after i hooked it up to clean it from coming back . all i did was just wipe the algee off after i hooked up uv sterilizer it can back once more did it again and i have not seen algee for about 3 weks now .

i have a turbo twist uv sterilizer . but there are much cheaper one's out there that work just fine . petsmart sell one you just put right in your tank and would probabley be better size for your tank .

10 hours of light is way to much WOW. cut that in half maybe 5 hours (that is still pushing it while you have this algee problem )

I added ONE Rubbbernose Pleco to my 40, eliminated algae completely, and there was plenty.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Gr8KarmaSF- No it is not by a window.

brettrotchell- a UV sterilizer is an option, I will look into that tomorrow. After this algae problem is gone, do you still think that I should only run the lights for 5 hours?

gomezladdams and ewurm- Do you think those plecos would be constantly harassed by my JD? I am going to be starting up a 90 I recently bought soon do you think I should just wait with the pleco until then?

A UV sterilizer will work well, however there are other methods. Removing the spores is the main thing. When you scrape have a siphon going for a water change, and just suck the algae out as you scrape. Take the sponge filter out, and clean the plastic (personally, unless you are breeding, I would take it out completely). Do this on a large 40% or more water change. Method two live plants. They will out compete the algae for nutrients, choking the algae off. Method three (which is bad if you have live plants) is a UV sterilizer.

A UV sterilizer will not get rid of brown algae. They only way to reduce brown algae is to reduce dissolved organics and silicates in the water. Been there and done that! The RO Right could be adding unwanted phosphates to your water, feeding the algae. Buffers often contain phosphate.

hi i had this problem in one of my tanks . after trying every thing i changed the light tube and what do you know , it sorted it . it turns out i was useing a domestic tube
(tank was second hand it came with the tube already fitted)
