I think this guy is a Geophagus Altifron but not too sure. Got him from a LFS and they usually have things labeled wrong. Not to mention I dont remember what it was labeled but I know it wasnt an Altifron. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

These look exactly the same as the "Surinamensis" supplied by Pet Smart. I believe they are G abalios, not altifrons. I'll admit I picked up a couple myself - nice looking fish at a decent price.

yea yea man that makes way more sense. Esp. because of the price. They were a lot cheeper than the Alifrons Ive been looking up online. Not to mention I was a bit tipsy at the time of purchase so I thought I bought these at a family owned LFS but now that I think about it - it was Pet Smart. Well thank ya brother. Have a good one.

Your going to need to grow them out a bit before you can get an accurate ID. The caudal pattern has yet to develop and the mid lateral spot/barring are not developed well enough for an accurate ID IMO.

haha I picked up two as well about 2-3 months ago, definately looking to be abalios. Im pretty sure suri's are rare and typically come in being abalios.

I agree with JK47, your fish are just too young to ID. Let them grow a couple of inches and then we'll be able to give you an accurate ID. Most likely they are altifrons or abalios.

As for G. surinamensis, you'll be luck to ever find a legit one. 99.9% of geos labeled as surinamensis are usually altifrons, abalios, dicrozoster, or another species. They are not exported thus very rare.

yea im definitely going to go w/ abalio from what i can tell so far. and the mid lateral spot is very distinct at times. Just not when I took the picture. Guess well wait and see. Thx guys
