First off I would like to say nice forum. First time I have been here but I am already impressed. Seems to be a lot of good information floating around. Also, I want to say that I am new to the forum but I have been keeping cichlids for a little over five years now. However, I haven't been doing much research for a few years now. I have just been keeping my red devil by himself, never really had any need for any other fish. Well, now things have changed.

I ordered a 210 gallon (72x24x29) tank yesterday to move my red devil into. I would like to keep a few more large cichlids with her as well as a few silver dollars, a couple of cons and a pair of neets. My question is what other cichlids would you all go for? I am wanting this to be an active tank, however I don't want to have a tank where fish are constantly dying, I would much prefer to buy fish that will be with me for years to come.

The cons will DIE...keep the red devils alone seriusly...

Well, in a 210 gallon there is room for quite a few cichlids in there.

Red Devils are fish that DO tend to live up to their name. I have heard of them killing off tanks full of fish.

Obviously if she's in there with a Jaguar, she'll be the one on the receiving end, but if you have her with fish of equal or less size, she might just take it upon herself to remove them from her new domain.

That said, you can try to have her in the 210, but its a gamble.

In a 210, you could have a nice list of medium to large cichlids, OR you could have a smaller list of HUGE cichlids. :D

If you want a larger community tank that remains peacful, you could do several SA and CA Cichlids.
Jack Dempseys, Convicts, Fire Mouths, Blue Acara, Oscars, Chocolates, Jewelds, GT's ..
the list goes on and on.

You should do some research and find a TON of differnt cichlids that you want, then come back here with your nice big list and the veterans can let you know which ones will work together and which wont.

Thanks for the opinions. How does something like this sound?

- 6 tinfoil barbs
- 3 silver dollars
- 1 common pleco
- 2 convicts
- 2 neets
- 1 red devil
- A couple other larger cichlids

I think the barbs and silver dollars should help divide up the attention of the cichlids to help keep the violence down to a minimum. Also, there will be plenty of hiding places for the smaller fish to get a break from time to time.

Please let me know if this sounds like a good idea or terrible.

the cons would die unless they are larger that the others and i dont know bout the silvers and tinoils... i tried to put them into my 100 witha dovii and they got killed. 3-tinfoild 2-SDs maybe just go with a few larger SA cichlids

Whenever I had my 125 a couple of years ago I had a red devil along with an oscars, a couple of convicts, a jewel cichlid and a texas cichlid. I also had five silver dollars. I never had a death or really any overly agressive behavior in that tank. Maybe I just got lucky.

Okay...what is the point of linking these two threads together? I believe there are differences in stocking a 75 gallon and a 210 gallon.

I'm just puttting this out there...

Has it got to be cichlids? How about some bichirs as tankmates?

Yeah, needs to be cichlids. The bichirs are neat, I just don't really have much of a desire to keep them. I appreciate the idea though.
