I'm not sure if this is the right part of the forum but anyways, I just got back from a local pond and found some sweet driftwood. The long one was washed up on shore and the other was in the water but still had some roots but def. appeared dead. Was just wondering if anyone has used wood in there tank that looks like this? (i have no idea what type of wood it is) the root looking piece has a little bit of red tint to it. Any help is appreciated. :screwy:IMG_5083.jpg

I would just give it a good scrubbing with a brush and water to remove any debris. I frequently use 'found' driftwood in my tanks without any problem. I do check it to see if it has any soft spots and maybe cut a piece off and give it the smell test to see if it smells like pine wood or is soft inside.

I really like the gnarled root one you got.

i did scrub it for a while when i first got it. i also just drilled a hole through it with a large pointed drill bit and it was kind of difficult to get it through so i know its atleast really hard wood on the inside. also i smelled the shavings and it didnt smell anything like a pine or cedar just the shavings had the smell of pond water (kinda smelled like ass) lol

i collect wood all the time at rivers.the red maybe some concern,i would look for more pieces to see if the red is on them.if it's a stain, then i wouldn't risk using it

well the pond is really clean and maintained so im not too worried about pollution/etc. plus i put it in a bleach solution and now letting it sit for the rest of the week in a prime/water solution and soaking it. so i hope it should be good cause its a really great piece
