Hi,
Okay So I have a red spot severum that is not acting right and having trouble eating. When i go to feed, it opens its mouth as wide as it can and shakes its head violently, like its trying to expel something. I noticed it 4 days ago and its getting worse and eating less and less everyday. It will still eat a little blood worms but spits out dry foods. It acts like it wants to eat but cant. Its hard to tell but when you look in its mouth while in the tank its throat looks black and seems swollen or like something is in there. The fish also constantly is opening its mouth even while not eating. Its still has vibrant color, clear eyes, good fins, and overall looks healthy. Water P's: 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 20 Nitrate, Temp 81..
So to tell the whole story to give more info. I bought a gold nugget pleco about a month ago and put it into my 90 gallon (different tank then the severum is in). The gold nugget after about 3/4 weeks died, before it died its stomach was very con caved. I never saw the pleco eat in the 90 gallon, so not sure if it had trouble acclimating in the new tank and starved or if it had something like internal parasites. The lfs store I bought the pleco from treated them and quarantined them before selling. The other plecos and fish in the tank at the lfs are still alive and eating if that tells us anything. Before the pleco died I moved a catfish from the 90 to my 300 which the severum lives in. The catfish hadn't eaten for a few days in the 90 and was acting odd but i didn't think anything of it and was excited to put him in the 300. It wasn't eating in the 300 and got picked on really bad by my severums, it jumped out and died after being in the 300 for 3 days.
So i guess i have some worry that the catfish had some disease that it passed on to the severum in my 300. However the catfish was only in the 300 for 3 days and the severum started this behavior maybe a day after the catfish jumped out. I'm not for sure if the severum would be infected so quick and showing symptoms if it was something from the catfish?
The Severum is now in a QT by its self. All the other fish in the 300 are eating and look normal. im hoping someone can help me with this and shed some light with any thoughts or info on my fish symptoms? I leave town for a week tomorrow. So what should if anything with the severum in the QT and how concerned should i be with my fish in the 300 gallon?
The QT tank is at 84F and I have added salt. I have added salt in the 300 as well and turned the temp up to 81. Would Epsom salt be a good idea for the QT tank? I have alot of meds stocked up as well if I should add anything?
Sorry to be all over the place. Freaking out I love my severum and have priceless/replaceable fish in the 300 gallon.
Please help me out
Thanks so much
