i know i could probubly post this under the planted tank forum but i thought id like to collect some moss for my semi-native tank. ive collected some from the tops of rocks in a stream by my house but it dosnt seem to grab on to anything. i would like to collect some moss that will cover all of the rocks in my aquarium. any ideas or advice on this would be much appreciated. thanks again in advance.

its hard to find moss in the local waters here, most of it is green algae. i'd find some you like, then tie it to a log, after its on for a week or two it will start growing like crazy.

if moss is growing above the surface of the water will it survive under water?
Probably not. You need an actual aquatic moss to survive underwater in your tank

In my experience, some of the native mosses I've come across are slow to grow and very slow to attach. I have had some luck with them, but you will definitely need to anchor it down by pinning it to something with wood, rocks, etc, or you can use monofilament (fishing line) to secure it to wood or rocks until it anchors.

And generally, no, moss found growing out of the water on a rock will not live underwater. There is a reason why you see moss on the dry surface of a rock in a stream, but no moss growing underwater on the same rock. Some mosses may live for a while when submerged, but in general, it will slowly die off.
