So i got myself a free 55 gallon tank off of craigslist. got a protein skimmer, a marineland emperor 400, a sponge filter and getting some live rock to help with the biological filtration. this tank will be dedicated to a snowflake moray eel and possibly some fish. but right now I am concentrating with the snowflake.

Would this be a good setup for the life of the eel? I hear people saying that you can keep them in a 35gallon dedicated to them their whole life, but i really dont believe in long term cramming of animals.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I will have some excellent hiding places for the snowflake as well as a very secure lid. The canopy is completely enclosed, only enough space for the filters to fit very snug. and I plan on putting a brick on the flap that opens

From my understanding it will work however i have not owned one just read up on it because i would like to.

Considering that they get upwards of 30" long, I think that a 55 would be too small for life but some people might disagree. It would be good in there for quite a while though in my opinion. You would have plenty of time to upgrade if you ever wanted to.

A 55 isn't too bad. You should use some pvc or something to make tunnels for it under the sand, that way it has a place to stretch out fully and feel secure at the same time. I'd def recommend getting a lot of live rock because you will be feeding the eel pretty large chunks of shrimp/fish etc. and that can pollute the water very fast. If you did that, the filter isn't even really needed. Most people with sw tanks don't even use them. I'd also look into getting a protein skimmer that's made to handle a tank way bigger than a 55. It will really help keep your tank clean.

Remember that more live rock also means more dead spaces in your tank where waste can accumulate and create a "nitrate factory"
