ok im getting a 50 gallon this weekends and i really want an oscar i dont really want to put it in a bigger tank i just this one to b for life..... what would b a good tank mate if any i was thinking just a bristlehead pleco and a jd or something i would appreciate the help thanks

an oscar will more thnan max out that 50 for tankmates youl want to look into a 75 gallon tank a dempsey or oscar in a 50 can be a great single fish tank tho

Yeah that 50 can just be for the oscar. He can outgrow that quick. You can raise a juvie in there but in a year or so, you will need to upgrade. 75g would be better or even a 90g. Then you can have that oscar and JD plus a pleco if you wanted to.

A full grown Oscar can eat a Bristlenose in 1/2 a bite so that's not a good tankmate even if the tank were big enough-which it's not. I wouldn't put a 12"-15" fish in a 4'x1' tank if I were you. Just not enough room.

Like stated above. Getting them small will let you watch them grow. But after a year or so you will need a bigger size.
If you get 2 or 3 smalls they will take a little longer to grow.

Start saving a little now and by the time you need a bigger tank. You should have enough.

ya thanks for the help i was planning on keeping an oscar alone in it but i was jw by the way the dimensions of the tank are 36"x19"x18"

I think you should be able to keep a single Oscar in that tank for life, with no tankmates. It has plenty of width which means the fish can turn easily. Just my opinion though.

Good tankmate would be an extra filter....Oscar's are messy boys...and in small quarters water quality will be your biggest challenge.

Sound advice.

I wouldn't recomend keeping such a fish in that tank long term. But at least there's space to turn freely with that wider footprint. Just be for-warned, you "will" have to upgrade to 75-90g in the future. You'll come to realise this anyway, once you see the body mass they aquire.:)
