A person in my area is currently selling two 8" male motoros for $75 each or $150 for the pair. Needless to say, I'm interested. I know that tank mates are generally not recommended, but I was wondering if a 6" lima shovelnose, a 6" pleco, a 9" clown knife, and a two 5" needle nose gars would be okay with an 8" motoro? Also, does anyone know the growth rate on male motoros? I'm fully aware of their adult size and the tank footprint they require. I just want to get an idea of how soon I would need to upgrade the tank. For the time being he we go into a 125. I just don't want to buy a fish I can't commit to. Thanks!

Also, what is the best way to transport them? I would have to take a 3 hour drive...

Not sure on the tankmates as I have never kept any of those with the rays but I would get rid of the pleco as it will likely suck on your ray. The 125 gallon won't last more then a few months if you want to keep the ray healthy and only if the tank is at least 18" wide or bigger. I raised a ray from a pup and in 2 years it was having its own babies and was 18 inches across.

Transportation Use a beer cooler(keeps the temp),power inverter for the car to plug in the air pump and they will travel fine. I drove 3 hours with a pair of leos in a big plastic bin and just used an air pump. Add a little water conditioner to the container like "Prime" or some kind of stress water additive. Don't over use though!

Well If I can only have the ray in the 125 for a few months, than I guess I'll have to pass. The tank measurements are 72 inches long, 18 inches front to back and 24 inches tall. I was hoping I would at least have a year. I just got so excited about the price. I already have fish in there that will require a larger tank in the future and on the off chance that the fish don't get along, I'll have more than one tank to upgrade. Oh well. Maybe some day I'll have the means to properly care for a ray. :) Thanks for your input!

Tankmates, Pleco = no rest = food for rays as they grow. You can house a motoro in a 125 for a year, there are plenty of threads on here that says you can house a trio for life in a 180. (optimal ? no. possible? yes)

Yeah, I guess it's possible to keep a ray in a 125 but just because it fits, doesn't make it a good idea. I agree that it isn't the optimal choice. I've decided to pass on buying one. I know if I bought it I would have to sell it eventually and I'd have a really hard time parting with a ray. :(

You have an absolutely perfect attitude about this, and a great head on your shoulders, in the future when you have a larger tank I'm sure you will have the ray of your dreams :D
