sand looks much nicer, but is definately harder to maintain.
it wont hurt your filter, but it will get some sand in there, and u will have to clean more often.
i have 3 RBPs, and when they get scared, they freak out and stir sand everywhere, nicht gut.

u need about a pound of sand per gallon. you can get it at home depot. if you get play sand, be sure to rinse that stuff several times until its clean. dont get owned like me.

I used pool filter sand in a tank. Its coarser and a little darker than playsand.I was able to clean it with a gravel vac without sucking any up.I washed it real well before putting it in the tank so no cloudiness

I don't have much time to get out and check prices... But I too would like to switch to sand.. My fish have seen everything but....

So can I get a price quote???

Thanks...

I second the pool filter sand. I tried play sand as well and i'm currently removing it because its so fine. Like mentioned before the pool filter sand is easy to clean and looks better IMO.
Its about $5 for 50lbs too.

i belive it was a fellow MFKer (not sure who) that said if you have sand you want malaysian trumpet snails, they will burrow into the sand and devour any organic material that falls to the bottom, keeps you from having to vacuum it so often.

Thanks guys !!! Keep the ideas and help coming !!! Would I get pool sand from home depot too...Also ,about those snails ,tell me more and would any snail work.....So, I guess I should not use or buy sand from a pet store...

Thanks ,
