I was away for a few days, when I came back. My flowerhorn was not acting right. No tail wagging and begging for food.. I did a 30% water change, then tested the water parameters a few hours later, nothing was out of range.

Then I noticed the dreaded white stringy mucus being disharged.
I immediatley treated the tank with jungle Parasite guard....
Did a 25% water change the next day and retreated... No improvement, raised the tank temp a few degrees and waited.....Needless to say he's not responding to any treatment ... waited a day then did another 25% water change and treated tank with carbon to pull all meds out of the tank...

Today I treated with Metronidazole....

Looking for input as the discharge continues and as I'm afraid this is not going to end well...

any ideas?:nilly::popcorn::nilly:

Give Metro 5 days. You should have tried metro first before anything else as it is not as harsh as others are.

if you used Jungle Parasite Clear, it doesn't sound like you used it as directed (?)

you would have changed 25% of the water 48 hours after the first treatment, not the next day . . . and a full course of treatment is 3 doses over six days . . . I did this just a few weeks ago on my main tank, and it worked perfectly

also, a key indgredient in JPL is metronidazole . . .

The mucous discharge has stopped.. He's still not himself , stomach area looks swollen??
Anyway I did a 50% water change today and placed purigen in the sump to clean up any medicines and organics in the water... I'll change another 50% tomorrow ...Then go back to his routine of bi weekly water changes...
Hopefully he will improve over time...placed a few baby convicts in his tank from my breeding program. In case his appetite returns.

I was a little impatient, in that every time I changed water I retreated the tank with a full dose...so he recvd 4 doses over as many days.:popcorn:

no worries . . . I've observed from your posts that you are pretty sharp about these things, so I was just making sure

Purigen might not be the best way to remove the old meds, I'd use old-school carbon to do it . . . even Seachem will say they aren't sure what effect Purigen will have on certain meds (although they do recommend removing it when medicating)

Sab_fan thanks for the input I'll go p/u some carbon today and treat tank.
FYI looked at purigen this morning the outside layer is colored "pink" not the usual tan to brown??:popcorn:
